Program description

The Geraldton program consists of rotations within Geraldton Hospital (a 73-bed hospital that serves as the Regional Health Campus for the Midwest), with an emphasis on general and/or specialty practice. A placement occurs on the general ward where broad medical, surgical, mental health and rehabilitation experience is obtained. An additional rotation may occur in a specialty area including Emergency Department, Operating Theatre or High Dependency Unit. Specialty areas are offered to successful applicants according to ranking at interview.

 Location

 Midwest - Rural and remote

 Program description

The Midwest program consists of rotations within the Midwest health region, with an emphasis on rural and remote and residential aged care practice. A placement occurs at Geraldton Hospital, a 73-bed hospital that also serves as the Regional Health Campus for the Midwest, where broad medical, surgical and rehabilitation experience is obtained. Additional rotations of at least 6 months occur at a rural & remote hospital in Exmouth, Meekatharra or Northampton (note that the Northampton graduate will spend the majority of their program at Northampton). These rural & remote sites offer their own friendly communities and unique and challenging clinical experiences. Location allocations are offered to successful applicants according to ranking at interview.

Carnarvon Hospital

Program description

Carnarvon Hospital is a 31 bed MPS (Multi-Purpose Service), located on the coast at the gateway to the Ningaloo Coast and servicing a local population of around 6000 people. The hospital provides a range of services including surgical, medical, paediatrics, maternity, emergency, residential aged care and Aboriginal health.

Midwifery graduate program

Program description

The program is based in Geraldton Hospital, a 73-bed hospital that also serves as the Regional Health Campus for the Midwest. Maternity patients have state-of-the-art facilities, with two labour wards, an 8 bed inpatient unit and a Level 2 nursery (3 cots). The unit is staffed by experienced midwives and medical staff including Consultant Obstetricians, who are supported in their work by a range of allied health and community health professionals. The hospital performs around 500 deliveries per year, and graduates may also have the opportunity to work in antenatal clinics at the hospital, at the local Aboriginal Medical Service, and/or at an Early Discharge Program. Graduate midwives will be supported by a Clinical Midwifery Specialist while working in Geraldton.

Midwest location description

Located 424 km north of Perth, the Midwest region is a vast area of pastoral and agricultural land, gold and base metal mining, and a lucrative fishing industry. The Gascoyne coastal area includes internationally recognised features such as the Ningaloo Reef near Exmouth and the Shark Bay World Heritage Property. The hinterland includes the outstanding Kennedy Ranges and Mt Augustus. Geraldton is the main town in the region, with a population of around 35,000.
