Location | Geraldton Hospital & surrounds (Midwest - rural and /or remote) | Intakes | February, May, August & November | Program description | The Midwest program consists of 6 month rotations within the Midwest health region, with an emphasis on rural and/or remote practice. A six month placement occurs at Geraldton Hospital, a 65-bed hospital that also serves as the regional resource centre for the Midwest, where broad medical and surgical experience is obtained. Additional rotations occur at a remote hospital in Exmouth or Meekatharra. These remote sites offers their own friendly communities and unique and challenging clinical experiences. Location | Geraldton Hospital | Intakes | February & August | Program description | The program is based in Geraldton Hospital, a 68-bed hospital that also serves as the regional resource centre for the Midwest. Maternity patients have state-of-the-art facilities, with two labour wards, an inpatient unit and a Level 2 nursery. The unit is staffed by experienced midwives and medical staff, who are supported in their work by a range of allied health and community health professionals. The hospital performs around 500 deliveries per year, and graduates may also have the opportunity to work in antenatal clinics at the hospital, at the local Aboriginal Medical Service, and/or at an Early Discharge Program. Located 424 km north of Perth, the Midwest region is a vast area of pastoral and agricultural land, gold and base metal mining, and a lucrative fishing industry. The Gascoyne coastal area includes internationally recognised features such as the Ningaloo Reef near Exmouth and the Shark Bay World Heritage Property. The hinterland includes the outstanding Kennedy Ranges and Mt Augustus. Geraldton is the main town in the region, with a population of around 35,000.
