West Pilbara service improvements

The Royalties for Regions scheme is providing funding to the West Pilbara for providing additional housing for staff, improving obstetric services, and planning the future needs of the health services in the West Pilbara.

Overview

Health services, infrastructure and staff accommodation in the West Pilbara and at Nickol Bay Hospital in Karratha are being upgraded and improved.

The WA Government's Royalties for Regions scheme is providing:

  • $7 million to provide additional housing for new and existing staff through construction or lease
  • $2 million to boost obstetric services in the West Pilbara
  • $1 million for a master planning project to evaluate the future needs of the Nickol Bay Hospital, which serves as the 'hub' health service to towns in the region, and health services in the West Pilbara.

The West Pilbara community is being invited to contribute to the planning for future health services in their towns.

Additional staff housing

A shortage of housing is a significant issue for agencies located in the Pilbara when trying to entice staff to the region. WA Country Health Service (WACHS) is currently working with the Department of Housing's Government Regional Officers Housing to acquire additional housing for staff in Karratha.

Enhanced obstetric services

WACHS Pilbara Region is working with Nickol Bay Hospital staff and King Edward Memorial Hospital to develop and implement a range of initiatives to enhance Nickol Bay Hospital Obstetric Services, including a staff rotation program and a Community Midwifery Service.
