The new Ochre Health Centre

The first integrated primary health facility in countryWestern Australiawas officially opened in Kununurra today, introducing a new approach to health care.

The $20.5 million Ochre Health Centre, also known as Ngoondengi Narrinda Dawang or place of wellness, brings a number of services together into one family friendly location.

Families can now access a raft of services at the centre including community health nurses, immunisation clinics, child and adolescent mental health services as well as physiotherapy speech and occupational therapy.

The WA Country Health Service, which will operate the federally funded Ochre Health Centre, is working to attract more GPs to work from the centre.

The new centre provides health care closer to home, creating partnerships between hospital and community based services.

A significant feature of the new clinic is a collaborative art work between nine Aboriginal artists which has been transformed into external and internal wall panels.

Future improvements to East Kimberley health services will include the installation of a CT scanner in Kununurra, additional staff accommodation in Halls Creek and a new remote area clinic in Warmun.
