The Southern Inland Health Initiative’s $300 million capital works program includes about $40 million to redevelop and reform three small hospitals in Cunderdin, Pingelly and Mullewa to create new fit-for-purpose health centres and to refurbish the Dongara Health Service into a contemporary primary care centre.

The innovative health centres at Pingelly and Cunderdin are a first for the Wheatbelt.  The centres will replace small hospitals offering limited in-patient care, and will focus on providing more primary health initiatives that keep people well, in the community and out of hospital through:

  • promotion of good health
  • prevention and early detection of illness
  • management of chronic disease.

The new health centres are being developed in consultation with the local communities at Cunderdin and Pingelly, and will give the community access to a range of health services and providers under one roof.

In addition to enhanced primary and community care facilities the health centres will continue to provide 24/7 emergency care from an upgraded emergency department.

To complement the new health centres in Cunderdin and Pingelly, suitable age-appropriate accommodation will be built alongside, providing an innovative solution to contemporary age-care needs.

Construction of Pingelly Health Centre started in December 2016 and is due to be completed by early 2018.

Construction of Cunderdin Health Centre is due to commence October 2017 and take around a year to complete.

The new Pingelly & Cunderdin Health Centres will include:

  • contemporary emergency departments
  • ambulance bays
  • Emergency Telehealth Service videoconferencing facilities
  • four multi-purpose consult rooms enabled with telehealth
  • group therapy rooms
  • general practice consultation rooms and treatment spaces.
