As part of the Southern Inland Health Initiative administered by the WA Country Heath Service, the Jurien Bay Health Centre is undergoing an expansion and refurbishment.

Wheatbelt Regional Director Sean Conlan said that thanks to the Southern Inland Health Initiative’s $300 million capital works project, Jurien Bay Health Centre is just one of many hospital and health centres to be upgraded.

“ADCO Constructions won the tender for the works which began in January this year and the project is expected to take around a year to complete,” Mr Conlan said.

“A great deal of the redevelopment has already been completed and includes a major extension to the outpatient care facilities including a new child health and outpatient treatment area, a new dental treatment area, roof works and improvements to the access road and additional parking.”

Other completed areas of the redevelopment include sound proofing of the group room, a new communications room, a new clean and dirty utility area, a new staff meeting room, an improved office, new workstations and hot desks and improved storage areas.

“Redevelopments such as those happening throughout the Wheatbelt mean that we can continue to offer high quality care to our patients without them having to travel great distances to the city to receive treatment,” Mr Conlan said.

The following items are still to be completed as part of the redevelopment:

  • a new triage room
  • structural improvements to the windows and new air-conditioning for the ED
  • a new fire exit door to ambulance bay
  • new, dual egress consultation rooms
  • improved security for staff and patients.

The Southern Inland Health Initiative’s $300 million capital works program is improving capital infrastructure in 37 towns across the Wheatbelt, Great Southern, Midwest and South West regions. In the Wheatbelt, Merredin, Northam and Narrogin Hospitals are being redeveloped as well as upgrades to 23 small hospitals and health centres across the region.
