Newly qualified nurses and midwives kick things off in the South West
25 graduate nurses and midwives have commenced in the South West, taking their first steps in their careers with WA Country Health Service.
The new recruits will work across a variety of clinical settings, gaining valuable hands-on experience.
Before stepping onto the South West wards, the graduates were recently orientated and completed an induction program designed to prepare them for what’s ahead.
It provided an opportunity for graduates to connect with their peers and be able to make new friends. They were encouraged to ask questions to staff and their mentors. This motivated them to build their confidence before they commence in their new clinical roles.
Executive Director Nursing and Midwifery Alison Weatherstone said choosing a career in country WA offers an experience unlike any other.
“By choosing to work in the country, you are embarking on an exciting and adventurous career with the opportunity to make a real difference,” she said.
“Our orientation equips graduates with organisational knowledge, and region-specific practices that provide and support care across diverse communities.”
For some, the move marks their first experience living and working regionally, while others have returned to communities where they previously studied or completed placements.
Beyond the workplace, graduates will also have opportunities to become part of their new communities – engaging in all that the region has on offer – the beaches, sporting teams, laid back lifestyle and shorter commute to work as just a few of the drawcards.
Regional Nurse Educator Glenda Cutler said the graduates worked hard throughout their studies and were ready to take the next step.
“New graduates bring enthusiasm and curiosity,” Glenda said.
“They will learn so much over the next 12 months and work very hard to consolidate all the information as they transition to become an enrolled nurse, registered nurse or midwife.”
With orientation complete, graduates are taking their first steps into their new roles with WA Country Health Service ready to put their skills and knowledge into practice.
