Bringing it home: WA Country Health Service expands innovative Hospital in the Home service
Imagine receiving hospital-equivalent care in your own home.
That’s now a reality for Western Australians who live in some of the most remote areas of the State, thanks to the expansion of WA Country Health Service’s Hospital in the Home (HITH) service.
Following the launch of the 2025/26 HITH Bed Expansion Project in July 2025, the HITH care pathways and governance framework underpin a clinically led, evidence-based model that delivers hospital-equivalent care in the patient's home, with patients remaining formally admitted to a WA Country Health Service hospital throughout their episode of care.
This HITH service supports eligible patients to remain at home or other suitable location while receiving the same levels of high-standard care they would expect during an admission to a brick and mortar hospital – including daily visits from WA Country Health Service clinicians who provide patient care.
WA Country Health Service Chief Operating Officer – Rural John Quinn said the model of care is designed to bring health services closer to home – delivering more person-centred, flexible and sustainable healthcare across country WA.
“This is not just another program,” Mr Quinn said.
"It’s a step toward a more modern, connected and compassionate health system – one that delivers for regional communities”.
The statewide expansion of Hospital in the Home was key to achieving increased capacity of the hospital system by providing alternative care options without reducing the quality of care.
With beds already open in Albany, Northam, Bunbury, Busselton and Geraldton, HITH expanded to 70 operational beds across country WA, increasing capacity by an impressive 600 per cent.
As part of the WA Country Health Service Winter Plan 2026, HITH bed capacity was temporarily increased by a further 18 beds to support potential winter demand.
