Adventure awaits for TRAVEL nurses and midwives

West Australian nurses and midwives are choosing to take up the country lifestyle thanks to the Transition to Rural – AdVEnture and Lifestyle (TRAVEL) Program.
Country adventure and career development come together through the TRAVEL Program, offering nurses and midwives the chance to experience three country rotations in a 12-month placement.
In 2021, WA Country Health Service nurse Isabelle began her TRAVEL journey and says anyone looking for adventure, change and variety should take part.
With rotations in Albany, Kalgoorlie and Roebourne, Isabelle said that after her experience as part of the program, she now plans to continue her career in country WA.
“I was exposed to a wide range of specialties that I wouldn’t have experienced otherwise, from busy emergency departments to small remote sites,” she said.
“All the while I got to explore our amazing state, the charm of regional WA and becoming a part of unique local communities you would normally pass through while on a holiday. It’s a work-life balance unlike anything in the city.
“It was a little daunting heading into a new town, but after a few weeks each place felt like home and I have made life-long friends and wonderful memories along the way.
“Working remotely opened me up to so many opportunities and experiences I wouldn’t have had otherwise that will be beneficial as my career advances.”
Acting Director of Nursing Workforce and Reform Regina Browne said the program highlighted the benefits of living and working in regional WA.
“The TRAVEL Program shows nurses and midwives that working in country WA offers so much more than just career progression,” she said.
“It is designed to educate, mentor and invest in our nurses and midwives and provide them with a variety of opportunities to learn and experience the unique opportunities available with WA Country Health Service.
“We’ve made no secret of the fact that we’re busier than ever and this program plays a fundamental role in attracting clinicians out bush, advancing their careers and providing exceptional care to our country communities.
