Pharmacy internship program drives graduates to consider a long-term career in country WA

A record number of intern pharmacists will deploy to remote and regional Western Australia as part of the WA Country Health Service (WACHS) pharmacy internship program.
Focused on growing the next generation of pharmacists, the program offers university graduates the opportunity to undertake specialist training and development in hospitals and health services across country WA.
Nine graduates will deploy to country WA in January 2023 – supported through accommodation subsidies, travel allowances and equipment.
Health Minister Amber Jade Sanderson recently joined WACHS Chief Executive Jeff Moffet and Chief Pharmacist Adam Hort to officially welcome country WA's newest cohort of pharmacists.
"Pharmacists are a vital part of the healthcare system and at WA Country Health Service, we want to do all we can to support graduates to grow, develop and build a career in the bush," Adam said.
The pharmacy graduates will be able to complete their internships in community, retail or hospital settings – marking a significant investment in the ongoing growth and sustainability of the pharmacy workforce.
The one-year program is specially designed to equip pharmacy graduates with the skills and experience needed to register as a pharmacist.
In return, country communities will benefit from great access to regional pharmacists in both hospital and community settings.
