Broome Midwifery Group Practice a beacon of support

The Broome Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) is delivering more than just babies - it's giving families personalised, compassionate care and long-lasting connections that support them through every birth, every step of the way.
The MGP model provides expectant women and their families with holistic care based on trust and relationship building with their known midwife throughout their pregnancy, during the birth and for the first six weeks postnatally.
For one local mum, that support has been nothing short of transformative. Over the past four years, she’s been guided through three pregnancies by midwife Jo - forming a bond that has meant the world to her.
“Jo has been more than just a midwife,” she shared.
“She’s been a calming presence, a trusted guide, and a true source of strength during some of the most significant moments of my life.”
Jo Newton, a midwife with decades of experience across the Kimberley, says hearing such heartfelt words is incredibly humbling.
“It’s a special privilege to be in a position where you can provide the same family continuity of care for all of their pregnancies and births,” Jo said.
“I’ve been lucky enough to care for women through their second, third and even fourth babies.”
Jo first fell in love with the Kimberley in 1996 and her commitment to the region has only deepened over time.
After working in Derby and Broome as both a midwife and registered nurse, she’s become a trusted presence in the community - particularly among Aboriginal families.
“I really enjoy working with Aboriginal women and their families,” Jo said.
“They bring strength, humour and unique perspectives to their journeys as mothers. All women are navigating complex lives, and it’s inspiring to walk alongside them through such an important chapter.”
The flexibility and patient-centred approach of the MGP model is a key part of its success. With the ability to offer home visits, after-hours appointments and longer consults, Jo says families feel more empowered and involved in their care.
“When women and their families are involved in their care, that’s where trust and connection can be built and improved,” she said.
“And it’s feedback like this that we get from families that make it all the more rewarding.”
Whether it’s your first baby or your fourth, the reassurance of a familiar face and ongoing support can make all the difference.
