HEALTH ALERT: Protect yourself against extreme heat - THREAT REDUCED

HEALTH ALERT: Protect yourself against extreme heat - THREAT REDUCED

Update as at: 11:19am, Friday 23 January 2026. Heatwave Watch and Act - THREAT IS REDUCED - Areas around Marble Bar, Nullagine and Telfer.

Heatwave conditions have eased, and temperatures in these areas are returning to typical summer levels.

Coping with hot weather can be very stressful and tiring. It can take a couple of days for you to completely recover.

To help you stay healthy after hot weather or extreme heat:

  • Continue to drink plenty of water so your body can get back in balance.
  • Open windows and doors during cooler parts of the day to ventilate and cool your home if it is safe to do so.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • If you feel unwell, make a time to see your closest medical centre.
  • Contact family and friends to see how they coped and to check if they need help.
  • Think about the things you could do differently so you are more prepared to cope next time it is very hot.
  • Make any changes needed to your home so it will be more comfortable next time there is hot weather or extreme heat.

Heatwave conditions have eased, and temperatures in these areas are returning to typical summer levels.

Today and for the next three days, the Bureau of Meteorology are forecasting temperatures higher than normal.

Extreme and severe heatwave conditions are likely to continue until mid-week.

Extreme heatwave conditions continue and are forecast in parts of the warning area, with severe heatwave conditions in other locations.

The Advice level warning for the eastern Kimberley has now been removed.

Heatwave Advice - THREAT IS REDUCED - Eastern Kimberley

Heatwave conditions have eased, and temperatures in these areas are returning to typical summer levels.

Conditions in both regions will likely continue until mid-next week.

This has been expanded to the eastern Pilbara, southern and eastern Kimberley.

Update as at: 16:29pm, Tuesday 13 January 2026. Heatwave Watch and Act – MONITOR CONDITIONS AS THEY ARE CHANGING

This has been expanded to the eastern Pilbara, southern and eastern Kimberley.

Impacted areas continue to change. Please be alert to heat conditions in your local area. If in doubt, continue to take precautions and follow the health safety advice.

Extreme heatwave conditions are forecast to be experienced in parts of the warning area, with severe heatwave conditions in other locations.

 


 

 

Update as at: 16:31pm, Monday 12 January 2026. Heatwave Watch and Act – PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST THE IMPACTS OF EXTREME HEAT

Extreme heatwave conditions are forecast to become more widespread throughout the week.

Impacted locations now also include: Kununurra, Sturt Creek, Balgo, Tanami, Telfer, Kunawarritji, Gingerah, and St George Ranges.

An extreme heatwave is impacting this area. Severe conditions are impacting additional widespread areas in the Kimberley and Pilbara including the Dampier Peninsular.

Conditions are likely to continue until mid-next week.

  


 

Current as at: 09:02am, Monday 12 January 2026. Heatwave ADVICE – PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST THE IMPACTS OF EXTREME HEAT

WA Country Health Service is advising people in the Kimberley – including: Lake Argyle; northern Dampier Peninsula; area bounded by Kundat Djaru (Ringer Soak), Kunawarritji, Telfer, Gingerah and Kurlku to prepare for extreme heat.

An extreme heatwave is impacting these areas.Severe conditions are impacting additional widespread areas in the Kimberley and Pilbara.

This is expected to last for three days until Wednesday 14 January 2026.

Health safety advice:

  • Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Fluids include water, diluted juice (mixed with water) and low sugar sports drinks.
  • Limit or avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks (including tea, coffee and energy drinks) as these can increase dehydration.
  • Apply sunscreen regularly.
  • Tell elderly neighbours and other vulnerable people about the hot weather coming.
  • Seek a place to keep cool, such as your home, a library, community centre or shopping centre.
  • Close your windows and draw blinds, curtains or awnings early in the day to keep the heat out of your home.
  • If available, use fans or air-conditioners to keep cool.
  • Limit time outdoors. If you need to go outside, try to do so in the early morning or late evening. If you do go outside make sure to put on a hat and sunglasses, apply sunscreen and try to stay in the shade.
  • When outdoors, wear lightweight, light-coloured and loose-fitting clothing that covers as much skin as possible.
  • Sleep with just a sheet over you in the coolest part of the house. Remove winter bedding and replace it with lightweight, cotton bedding.
  • Wrap medications needing refrigeration in foil or heat repellent containers with an icepack to keep them cool if there is a power outage.
  • Charge mobile devices in the event there is a power outage.
  • Get a battery powered radio with working batteries.
  • Make sure you have shelter ready and water for pets and other animals.
  • Never leave a person or a pet in a closed car.
