    Local artists selected for new cancer hostel 07 May 2018 Five local artists have been selected to provide artwork at the new Midwest Cancer Hostel. The artwork comprises paintings and photographic canvases which will adorn the walls of the hostel as well as screening to separate the onsite car park and communal garden areas. The $1.38 million Midwest Cancer Hostel is on track for completion next month and will include seven double rooms providing accommodation for cancer patients and their carers from outlying remote communities, to enable access to cancer treatment and/or specialist cancer services closer to home. The hostel is being constructed by the WA Country Health Service as part of funding totalling $5.48 million provided by the Australian Government’s Health and Hospitals Fund (HHF) which included $4.1 million for the Midwest Cancer Centre that opened in November 2016.     Emergency department and outpatient facilities opened 26 April 2018 Agricultural Region MLC Darren West represented Health Minister Roger Cook today to officially open the main build component of the Katanning Health Service, which is undergoing a major redevelopment. The redevelopment is part of a $300 million capital works program that is improving healthcare infrastructure in 37 towns across the Wheatbelt, Great Southern, Mid-West and South-West regions.     Auxiliary camera donation focuses on Northam Hospital 03 April 2018 The tireless efforts of the Northam Hospital Ladies Auxiliary have been brought into focus with the donation of a state-of-the-art wound camera. The Silhouette Star wound camera with accompanying trolley and laptop is valued at almost $10,000 and will be used to treat patients across the Wheatbelt region attending the wound clinic with complex and chronic wounds. Wound clinic staff are extremely excited to receive the donation and are currently undergoing training with the equipment. The new camera will also be available for use in the podiatry department, ED and patient ward. The camera’s lasers and lights are able to measure wound depth, width and length reducing the risk of contamination and produces vital information to assess the status of wound healing.     Midwest cancer patients will be at home with new hostel 03 April 2018 The Midwest Cancer Hostel will provide rural communities with access to the health services they need, as close to home as possible, when it opens its doors later this year. WA Country Health Service’s Acting Regional Director Midwest, Karen Street, said the hostel was an important development for the region, which will enable people to live as part of their community while also receiving the support and treatment they require. “A cancer journey can be long and arduous; more an uphill trek than an actual journey. “Providing health services as close to home as possible is an important step in the health and wellbeing of our rural communities and the hostel is closely located behind the recently completed Midwest Cancer Centre to ensure patients are near to their treatment facilities. “With seven double rooms, the accommodation is great news for not only the people ...
  • The Narrogin Health Service has a new feature artwork at the main entrance thanks to the State Government's Percent for Art Scheme
    Artwork tells local story of fusion and renewal 20 March 2018 The two-year redevelopment of the Narrogin Health Service has reached a new stage, with the installation of the feature artwork at the main entry of the hospital. WA Country Health Service Wheatbelt (WACHS) Regional Director Sean Conlan said the artwork was a tribute to ancient and recent history of the local environment, and had been created in consultation with local Aboriginal elders and using local craftsmen. “Artist Lorenna Grant has created a unique artwork that tells the story of the local eco-system and environment,” he said. “Artwork is an important aspect of healthcare and it is wonderful that the State Government’s Percent for Art Scheme allocates specific funds for this in the development of public buildings. “Research released in 2016 by the WA Arts and Health Consortium Reference Group showed that art in clinical settings improves clinical outc...
