WA Country Health Service Dr Jessica Kopec is a Medical Education Registrar with a deep personal and professional connection to country WA.
Growing up in Geraldton, she completed her third-year medical training through the Rural Clinical School and was eager to come back to her roots after her study.
Her early rural experience laid the foundation for a fulfilling career across Bunbury, Albany, and remote outreach clinics.
After completing her internship at Royal Perth Hospital and gaining critical care experience at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Jessica embraced the unique challenges and rewards of rural medicine.
“The sense of community and the diversity of clinical work in rural WA have been incredibly rewarding,” she says.
Now working at WA Country Health Service’s Central Office, Jessica plays a key role in supporting the education and development of junior doctors across the Midwest.
Through initiatives like the RAPTOR and ASPIRE programs, and courses such as ProStart Anaesthetics, WA Country Health Service fosters professional growth in its medical workforce.
Jessica says you learn a broad range of skills – even beyond the clinical setting.
“It teaches you to be resourceful and innovative while offering opportunities to build lasting connections in some of WA’s most beautiful regions.”
Beyond clinical growth, Jessica says it’s the encouragement to engage in leadership and service improvement that make it worthwhile.
“WA Country Health Service encourages junior doctors to engage in leadership roles, clinical service improvement projects, and wellbeing initiatives.
“These opportunities help to create well-rounded clinicians who are prepared for the unique challenges of rural practice.”
Looking ahead, Jessica aspires to become a well-rounded clinician with broad skills, inspired by the rural generalists she has worked alongside.
For up and coming clinicians, Jessica says working in the country is a one-of-a-kind experience.
“One of the most rewarding aspects of rural practice is the close-knit hospital community,” she said.
“You quickly get to know almost everyone, from senior staff to administrative teams, who are incredibly supportive and dedicated to making your experience both enjoyable and fulfilling.
“Give it a go. The experiences and opportunities you gain are invaluable,” she added.
